Sooooo… I have some news! Most of you already know this. Because most of you are already my friends. But for those of you who don’t or want to hear more about it… I HAVE A NEW JOB! Yes, that’s right. Megan Brady, who has been working at SPU Admissions since the day she graduated in 2007, has a NEW job, NOT at SPU. And not just any job, but precisely the job and opportunity I have been praying for for over a year. God is faithful and He sure loves His children (me!).
In a few short weeks (August 10th to be exact) I will be starting a new position as the Lead Reservationist at Canlis restaurant. In a nutshell, I will oversee every reservation and work with Canlis’ VIP customers among many other detail oriented responsibilities of a fine dining establishment.
Let me explain to you how divinely beautiful this whole experience has been.
I have been searching and praying for a new job opportunity for about 2 years. For most of that time I haven’t known what that would look like. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, and there was no clear path. I dabbled in lots of different areas; baking, retail, interior design. I knew I wanted to work in something creative, but wasn’t sure what that would look like.
About a year ago, through a friend, I heard about a project management internship on the Global Creative Team at Starbucks corporate. I applied, and after 2 interviews was notified that the funding for the internship had been pulled and the position had been terminated. I was extremely disappointed. However grateful, as the experience taught me a ton. It taught me that I had a strong skill set that could in fact be used outside the walls of SPU. That I was really good at interviewing. And that I had what it took to work at a big name Starbucks corporate. It also opened my eyes to the idea of creative management. This was a term I was unfamiliar with until then. I knew I loved all things creative; food, music, design, etc, but that at the same time am very detail oriented and have a passionate love for my planner. I knew I wasn’t an artist, but that I wanted to work with them. I knew I could me the detailed mind that made the creative process work.
Then, a few months ago, I took a Myers Briggs/Strongs Interests test. What the test revealed was what I had been learning over the past year or so; that my skills, gifts, and passions are in creative management, suggesting careers in retail or restaurant management.
One of my dearest friends, Heather, has worked at Canlis for 2 years as their office manager and for the majority of that time I have envied her job but never thought that there would actually be an opportunity for me to work there. If you don’t know, Canlis is one of, if not the very best and nicest restaurants in Seattle, world renowned for their top quality food and hospitality. Their head chef, Jason Franey, was recently named one of Food and Wine Magazine’s Best New Chefs 2011 and The People’s Best New Chef Northwest by Food & Wine.
A few months ago Heather decided that she was going to leave Canlis to pursue a future in writing. This was something I had talked through with her, but still did not think about what her leaving Canlis would mean for my own career path. Until one day a few weeks ago Heather asked to get together to talk about me applying for the open position in her office. That night we got together and it quickly became apparent that this open position as the Lead Reservationist may just be the perfect opportunity for me, and that I may be just the perfect person for this position. That night I stayed up late revising my resume and sent it off to Heather to submit for consideration for the position. Soon after I was called for an interview and then invited for a 2nd, and then a week later received the happy call that they were offering me the position.
The more I think about it, the more grateful I am. I feel so honored and excited to work for such an incredible family owned business. I have so much respect and admiration for the Canlis family and am just to excited to be a part of what they are doing.
As I stated previously, God is good and He sure loves His children.
I’m sure I’ll have lots of stories to share about all the new things I’m learning. I am a newbie to the restaurant industry so there will be lots to learn, but I could not be more excited. For example, I learned yesterday from Heather that my beloved Lean Cuisines (my lunch almost every weekday for the past 4 years) are a no-no. Goodbye, Lean Cuisines, you’ve served me well.

Hi! How are you?! It’s been a little while!
Just checking in- or as we say in my family, ‘Communication Check!’
There are so many things I want to blog about these days- life is brimming with great stuff! However it’s so brimming that I don’t have time to take pictures or blog… funny how that works.
So, I’ll give you a teaser, here’s what I’ve been dreaming about:
- Having my incredible student staff over for my first dinner party in my new apartment.
- My new apartment!
- Literal book shelfs.
- iphone cases (!)
- Kim Ficaro
- Cake Class!
- Grandma’s jewelry
- Swedish blogs (Kali!)
- More that I’m sure I’m not remembering….
Hopefully I’ll have time to sit down and tell you about these things soon.
Happy Tuesday!
xo,
Meg
